Monos  (15)

Spanish Thriller

Saturday 16th November 2019, 8pm
Certificate  Duration 102mins

Director: Alejandro Landes
Cast includes Sofia Buenaventura, Julian Giraldo, Karen Quintero, Laura Castrillón, Deibi Rueda, Paul Cubides

Spanish drama set on a remote mountain in Latin America where a group of young guerillas watch over a prisoner and dairy cow for a shadowy force known as "The Organisation".

"This overpoweringly tense and deeply mad thriller from Colombian film-maker Alejandro Landes is the best thing I have seen at Berlin this year: something between Apocalypse Now, Lord of the Flies and Embrace of the Serpent. It depicts a dysfunctional society and guilt-ridden family in miniature, and demonstrates the shifting power dynamics of a cult, the craziness embedded in the minds of child soldiers, the resentments nursed in a military unit without a supervising commanding officer, and the very real danger of eating shrooms grown in cowshit." Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

"Monos is gorgeous, but it is also lucid as hell. And it all happens at lightning speed." David Sexton London Evening Standard

"Inspired by the upheaval in his native Colombia, Alejandro Landes’s story of teenage guerrillas descending into anarchy is a hypnotic triumph....
Interwoven with the film’s soundscape, Mica Levi’s music is as boldly adventurous as the movie itself – haunting, challenging, affecting, alarming and utterly mesmerising."
"Mark Kermode. Observer
